Research

My doctoral thesis, provisionally entitled Domestic Drumbeats, Distant Echoes: Assessing Alliance Credibility from the Outside-In, examines the impact of domestic politics on the credibility of alliance commitments. It does so by exploring US-European alliances over the course of the Cold War, using original evidence to assess how European leaders factored the US' domestic politics into credibility calculations. The thesis also points forward towards the modern era and explores the impact of contemporary fracturous politics on the US' ability to create resolute alliance networks, thus providing a relevant and timely contribution to the academic literature.

Research Interests

Outside of my doctoral thesis, my work explores the connection between domestic politics and foreign policy more broadly. I am able to speak to the following areas:

• US Politics and UK Politics (including the Anglo-American Relationship)
• International Security
• Foreign Policy
• Grand Strategy
• Alliance Politics
• Political Polarisation

Working Papers

  • I am currently working on a co-authored paper on the influence of political polarisation in American nuclear policy and a single authored paper building on my early thesis findings. The latter will be presented in working form later this academic year.
